How to Design a Comfortable and Productive Home Office

Whether you're working remotely full-time or just need a quiet space for focused tasks, a well-designed home office makes all the difference. At Jenkinsons, we believe your workspace should be just as functional as it is inspiring. Here's a step-by-step guide to setting up the perfect home office—from choosing the space to adding those finishing touches.

1. Start with the Right Spot

Before anything else, pick a quiet, low-traffic area of your home. Avoid spaces near busy kitchens or living rooms if possible. A spare room with a door is ideal, but even a corner of a bedroom or hallway can work with the right layout and furniture.

Tip: Comfort and quiet are key. Choose a spot where you’ll be able to concentrate and take video calls without constant interruptions.

2. Maximise Natural Light (and Add More If Needed)

If your chosen space has a window, use it! Natural light improves focus, mood, and reduces eye strain. The best position for your desk is perpendicular to the window, allowing light to flow in from the side without glaring on your screen.

If your space doesn’t get much sunlight, add a daylight LED desk lamp or a floor lamp with adjustable brightness.

Tip: Avoid placing your screen directly in front of or behind a window—both can cause frustrating screen glare or backlighting.

3. Invest in Ergonomic Essentials

A stylish space is great, but comfort is non-negotiable. Choose a height-appropriate desk and a supportive, adjustable chair. Make sure your screen is at eye level and your feet rest flat on the floor or a footrest.

Tip: Look for chairs with lumbar support and adjustable armrests to stay comfortable during long work sessions.

4. Stay Organised with Smart Storage

A clutter-free space helps you stay focused. Use compact shelves, drawers, or filing cabinets to keep paperwork and supplies out of sight but within reach.

Tip: Floating shelves are a great space-saving option, and storage boxes can add both function and style.

5. Add Personal Touches (Yes, Including Plants)

Once the basics are in place, it’s time to make the space feel like you. Add a few personal items—framed photos, inspiring prints, or even a stylish clock.

And don’t underestimate the power of greenery! Houseplants not only look great but can improve air quality and reduce stress.

Tip: Try easy-care options like snake plants, pothos, or succulents—perfect for desks and shelves.

6. Don’t Forget Tech & Lighting Accessories

Think about practical finishing touches:

  • A cable organiser to keep cords tidy

  • A desk lamp with warm, adjustable light

  • A mouse mat with wrist support

  • Even a whiteboard or pinboard for to-do lists and ideas

Tip: Soft, layered lighting (ceiling + desk + accent) makes your office feel calm and balanced all day long.
